Always Second.

To give and give,
and sacrifice.
Seems it shall never suffice.

Over and over,
Made to be the companion,
always just a bystander,
Abandoned.

I feel it all;
they know it not,
for they turn their head,
to search for the next want.

Call upon call,
to stand by their side,
to listen intently
with arms open wide.

What it is, to let my wants fade,
to make them smile, to make the grade.
Still no matter what I give,
No reconciliation for meeting their terms,
Always for more they yearn.

I’ve given it all,
My own wants I’ve lessoned,
Only to please them,
And still come in second,
….or 3rd.

I make no demands,
I ask for nothing,
Except a smile,
Still, all the while,
My only reward,
A saddened goodbye,
Another demand,
A little more of myself,
Right over I’ll hand.

What reward is this?
For life lived in service.
I’ve no recourse.
I cannot cure this.

Still to meet their needs,
I am but a lowly servant.
